A low-income clinic in Las Vegas improperly administered the H1N1 vaccine to 21 children, but state health officials said they corrected the problem so no harm was done.

At the height of the H1N1 panic in late October, the vaccine was in short supply and was not being delivered in dosages for children under the age of 4 at the Martin Luther King Family Center, just north of the Interstate 15-U.S. 95 interchange.

Michelle Agnew, head of operations at Nevada Health Centers, the nonprofit organization that runs the clinic, said the pediatrician at the clinic decided to use half of a dose that should be used for older children — and then saved the remainder of the dosage in a syringe. The plan was to use the syringe on the same child 28 days later.

The quantity of vaccine was appropriate, but the improvised method of administering it was not, health officials said.

Nevada State Health Division officials became alarmed Nov. 6 when they had a phone conversation with staff at the center. The potentially unsafe procedure had gone on for about a week. Health officials reported three problems to the Nevada Board of Medical Examiners:

• The dosage the clinic had received was not licensed for children under age 4.

• The vaccine in the prefilled syringes did not contain a preservative, which meant it could pass bacteria to children if it was readministered.

• Reuse of syringes is not allowed because it could spread infectious diseases.

Medical board investigators went to the clinic immediately and corrected the practice. The initial dosage was the correct amount, health officials said, and the second dose was never administered. Instead, the clinic had received the appropriate dosage in individual vials by the time the children returned to the clinic.

Agnew said the flurry of activity around the H1N1 virus caused confusion in the initial distribution of the vaccine, but most of the confusion has cleared up now that the vaccine is more widely available.

Agnew, who did not name the doctor, said the medical board closed its investigation without disciplining the physician.

BEIJING, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese medical specialists announced Thursday they had developed a Chinese herbal medication to treat the A/H1N1 flu.

Seven months of scientific and clinical studies showed the remedy, called "Jin Hua Qing Gan Fang," was effective in treating A/H1N1 flu patients, said Wang Chen, president of Beijing's Chaoyang Hospital.

"It can shorten patients' fever period and improve their respiratory systems. Doctors have found no negative effects on patients who were treated in this way," he said.

"It is also very cheap, only about a quarter of the cost of Tamiflu," he said at a press conference held by the Beijing Municipal Government.

Tamiflu, a product of Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding, was recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the treatment of the A/H1N1 flu.

"The municipal government has gathered the most outstanding medical experts in the Chinese capital to develop the new medication," Zhao Jing, director of the Beijing Municipal Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said at the press conference.

Over the past seven months, more than 120 medical specialists, led by academicians Wang Yongyan and Li Lianda from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, had participated in the research, she said.

The municipal government earmarked 10 million yuan (1.47 million U.S. dollars) for the project, she said.

"Medical experts proved the effectiveness of Jin Hua in treating A/H1N1 flu from both the basic scientific studies and clinical studies," she said.

The basic scientific studies lasted for almost five months and were conducted by experts from the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Beijing University of Technology.

"In vivo and in vitro, experiments on mice and rabbits show JinHua can bring down a fever and resist the A/H1N1 flu virus," said Huang Luqi, vice president of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.

Thursday's Beijing Daily hailed the new herbal medication as the "world's first traditional Chinese medicine to treat the A/H1N1 flu".

Citing medical officials, the paper said "Jin Hua" was picked from among more than 100 classic anti-flu prescriptions based on traditional Chinese herbal medicine.

"Science workers proved its effectiveness through medical experiments on more than 4,000 mice and clinical studies on 410 patients with slight A/H1N1 flu syndrome," it said.

The "Jin Hua" prescription had been adopted in many local traditional Chinese medicine hospitals, it said.

Zhao Jing said 11 hospitals nationwide, including Chaoyang Hospital and Ditan Hospital in Beijing, had conducted clinical studies on "Jin Hua" and gave positive assessments.

"We are applying for patents for 'Jin Hua' both at home and abroad," she shttp://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-12/17/content_12662674.htmaid.

"We are further developing the medicine and trying to present it to the whole country and world as soon as possible, thus offering an alternative to treat the A/H1N1 flu," she said.

The Chinese mainland has reported almost 108,000 A/H1N1 flu cases, including 442 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.

Dr. Cris Tunon, senior program management officer at the WHO Representative Office in China, said Thursday the "WHO welcomes the clinical results," as the traditional Chinese medicine offered a low-cost treatment of A/H1N1 flu.

1,500 rioters since Saturday. ClimateGate

Governments should take Note of the level of violence. The people were lied to.. they found out. To push for the world to send them money now is absurd! How stupid do they think people are?

1,500 rioters since Saturday. ClimateGate

The UN climate summit taking place in the Danish capital has been overshadowed by the violence, which saw 200 arrested overnight.

And it could get worse!

Police in Copenhagen were forced to use tear gas and water cannons to control the crowds in the so-called ‘Free State of Christiana’.

Several groups had established barricades, lit fires and thrown firebombs at the police.

Since Saturday, a total of 1,500 rioters have been taken into custody!

Christiana is a barracks compound close to the centre of Copenhagen which has been occupied since the 1970s and used as an alternative housing development. The inhabitants regard themselves as being independent of the national authorities.

The security forces – who have already come in for criticism over their tactics – will face a new challenge on Wednesday, with militant groups announcing they want to rally in the face of a ban on meeting places around the summit.

Despite the outbreak of violence, the climate summit will continue on Tuesday with new negotiations between representatives of developing countries and industrial nations.

Environment ministers from 192 states have been meeting since the beginning of the week to discuss a protection agreement to combat global warming and the temperature rise caused by greenhouse gases.

New flu resembles feared 1918 virus: study

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE56C3K120090713

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The new H1N1 influenza virus bears a disturbing resemblance to the virus strain that caused the 1918 flu pandemic, with a greater ability to infect the lungs than common seasonal flu viruses, researchers reported on Monday.

Tests in several animals confirmed other studies that have shown the new swine flu strain can spread beyond the upper respiratory tract to go deep into the lungs -- making it more likely to cause pneumonia, the international team said.

In addition, they found that people who survived the 1918 pandemic seem to have extra immune protection against the virus, again confirming the work of other researchers.

"When we conducted the experiments in ferrets and monkeys, the seasonal virus did not replicate in the lungs," said Yoshihiro Kawaoka of the University of Wisconsin, who led the study.

The H1N1 virus replicates significantly better in the lungs."

The new swine flu virus has caused the first pandemic of the 21st century, infecting more than a million people, according to estimates, and killing at least 500. The World Health Organization says it is causing mostly moderate disease but Kawaoka said that does not mean it is like seasonal flu.

"There is a misunderstanding about this virus," he said in a statement. "There is clear evidence the virus is different than seasonal influenza."

Writing in the journal Nature, Kawaoka and colleagues noted that the ability to infect the lungs is a characteristic of other pandemic viruses, especially the 1918 virus, which is estimated to have killed between 40 million and 100 million people.

Although this is an earlier in the year article, I add this to show ppl they were messing with this stuff before the pandemic. Many have said the 1918 flu is very much like this years flu.

A Kansas State University researcher has found that the virus causing the Spanish influenza pandemic in humans in 1918 was able to infect and replicate in pigs, but did not kill them, unlike in other mammalian hosts like monkeys, mice and ferrets where the infection has been lethal.

Oral Roberts dies from Pneumonia / flu complications

Pneumonia claims Oral Roberts, many flu sufferers

This is why we are having such Trouble understanding the H1n1 infection deaths. This article says Pneumonia, as so many do. They should be saying H1N1 which resulted in severe Pneumonia.

Dec. 16--News broke yesterday that prosperity gospel and faith-healing preacher Oral Roberts died from complications of pneumonia. The 91-year-old Oklahoma native and founder of a namesake university and Pentecostal ministry had been in increasingly poor health since suffering a heart attack in 1992. He went into the hospital over the weekend after falling and breaking several bones.

Frailty made Roberts susceptible to the inflammatory lung disease that led to his finally being "called home." Physical and immune system weakness also puts millions of Americans at risk for bacterial, viral or fungal pneumonia each year. The disease is the eighth-leading cause of death in the United States.

Pneumonia usually develops secondarily, meaning most patients succumb to pneumonia after they have already battled another, milder infection or have had another major health problem. For instance, the 10,000 estimated swine flu deaths that occurred in the United States between mid-April and mid-November of this year have largely resulted from the complication of pneumonia.
